The 1979-80 season was Wayne Gretzky’s first season in the NHL, with the Oilers making the transition from the World Hockey Association to the NHL after the WHA shut down. While there were some critics who stated Gretzky would struggle in a bigger, tougher, and more talented NHL, Gretzky’s first season was a massive success. The 1979-80 season saw Gretzky put up 51 goals and 86 assists and at just 19 years old Gretzky would win the Hart Trophy and Lady Byng Memorial Trophy (his 137 points tied for the league lead but he did not win the Art Ross Trophy because Marcel Dionne had two more goals).
